Fore! CBS Surprisingly Parts Ways With Popular Golf Analyst David Feherty

CBS Sports has decided not to renew on-course reporter David Feherty’s contract. Feherty, who has been with CBS for 19 years, called his final golf tournament with CBS last weekend at The Barclays. Sources said the two sides could not reach an agreement on Feherty’s role for the net’s golf coverage. Feherty has a relationship with NBC Sports Group and hosts an interview show on Golf Channel called “Feherty" (John Ourand, Staff Writer). GOLF DIGEST's Joel Beall reported NBC is believed to be the "early favorite as Feherty's landing spot." The net, which owns Golf Channel, has the rights to the Ryder Cup, Olympics and the British Open beginning in '17. Feherty "became popular with audiences for his witty and bombastic commentary" (GOLFDIGEST.com, 9/1). USA TODAY's Chris Chase wrote Feherty's "devil-may-care attitude and his distinct personality made him one of the most lovable analysts on TV," and he had "carte blanche to say whatever he'd like, almost like a golf Charles Barkley." He was "every bit as important to CBS's golf coverage as Jim Nantz or Nick Faldo" (USATODAY.com, 9/1). Feherty is "persistently poking fun at the game, the players and himself," and his "one-liners are too numerous to count" (GOLFWEEK.com, 9/1).

NEEDING TO TAKE A MULLIGAN? Global Golf Post's Ron Green Jr. wrote on Twitter, "Disappointed to hear David Feherty won't continue his work on CBS golf coverage...Guessing he'll land elsewhere." Golf Digest's Ashley Mayo: "I was at the Barclays on Sat, and David Feherty got way more catcalls from the crowd than the golfers he was covering. Scoop him up, NBC!" ESPN's John Buccigross: "Really going to miss David Feherty on the 15th hole on Augusta Sunday. He raised his game and never sounded better than at that Sunday hole." The Charlottesville Daily Progress' Jerry Ratcliffe: "Feherty is one if the very best things about golf today." "Dan Patrick Show" producer Paul Pabst: "One of the best announcers in any sport."
