CBS Reverses Two-Year PGA Tour Decline, Sees Tourney Viewership Rise 29% For Season

After two years of double-digit percentage declines, CBS saw its viewership for PGA Tour events this season -- excluding majors -- jump 29%. The net averaged 2.7 million viewers for 19 events during the '14-15 season, marking the net's best figure since it drew 2.75 million viewers for 20 events in '12. This season was also ahead of the 2.3 million viewers in '11. CBS was served well this season by wins from the Tour's younger generation. After Jordan Spieth won the first two majors of the season, he stayed with a commitment to play the John Deere Classic in the lead-up to the British Open in July. He would go on to win the event in a playoff, giving CBS its best audience for the event since '99 and up well over 130% compared to last year. CBS also saw a rise for the Wells Fargo Championship, which saw Rory McIlroy win. The network was the beneficiary of Tiger Woods' first-ever appearance at the Wyndham Championship a few weeks ago. Woods was in contention on Sunday, giving CBS its best figure for any PGA Tour final round (non-major) since the finale of the '12 Quicken Loans National -- which Woods won. When including CBS' coverage of The Masters and PGA Championship, CBS averaged 3.5 million viewers, up 28% from last year and up 15% from '13. Spieth's win at Augusta gave CBS a 26% bump this season, while the final round of the PGA Championship, which saw Jason Day win his first major, was up 19%.
