MLB Media Notes: ESPN Bumps Schilling From This Weekend's "Sunday Night Baseball"

In N.Y., Michael O'Keeffe writes the fallout from Curt Schilling's tweet "equating Muslims to Nazi Germany continues," as the network "will bump the analyst from the broadcast booth" for this weekend's Cubs-Dodgers "Sunday Night Baseball" telecast. Schilling's future with the net "remains to be determined but he is not expected to lose his job over the controversial remark." ESPN on Tuesday announced that it had removed Schilling from its Little League World Series coverage (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/27).

ROGER, OVER! In Toronto, Brendan Kennedy reports the same day his months-long standoff with Sportsnet was made public, Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista said that he "will no longer boycott" the team's official broadcaster. Bautista: "The issue’s resolved and we’re moving on." Bautista "refused to elaborate on how the conflict was resolved, but he spoke one-on-one with Sportsnet’s Barry Davis before the game." Reps from the Blue Jays and Sportsnet -- which are both owned by Rogers Communications -- "declined to comment" (TORONTO STAR, 8/27).

THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY: In Boston, Dan Shaughnessy writes the Red Sox and NESN officials "may have underestimated the reaction to their dumping" of play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo, who "has been part of the Sox broadcast team" since '01. The silence from NESN and Red Sox ownership "only adds to the outrage." NESN’s "clumsy late-night statement lauded Orsillo’s replacement but made little mention of Orsillo’s lengthy tenure." Shaughnessy: "Cowardly NESN officials have thus far taken no questions on the matter and offered no explanation for Orsillo’s firing." Red Sox Chair Tom Werner -- the man who "runs NESN -- is nowhere to be found when NESN makes a major change that outrages fans." Shaughnessy: "Where’s the accountability?" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/27).
