USOC Launching Third Iteration Of Team USA App, With Plans To Keep Alive After Rio Games

The USOC launched a new version of its Team USA mobile app today, sponsored by partner The J.M. Smucker Co., and it hopes this one will stick around awhile. The third edition of the app focuses on the '16 Rio Games but is designed to remain active indefinitely after the Closing Ceremony next August. The '12 London and '14 Sochi apps were not maintained after the Games. The app includes breaking-news alerts for Rio qualifying events, originally produced content, exclusive video about Team USA athletes and a real-time results tracker that will go live during the Games. It is available for download on iOS, Android and Windows systems. Since first launching a mobile app in '12, the USOC has reported steady gains in digital viewership and ad sales. More than 360,000 users downloaded its “Road to Sochi" app, which marked nearly a 40% gain over London. The early launch and planned ongoing nature of the app is part of USOC’s strategy of convincing sponsors and advertisers they can reach consumers outside of the traditional Olympics windows. Financial terms of the Smucker's app sponsorship were not disclosed. In the deal, Smucker's gets a prominent logo placement on the bottom of the viewing screen. Smucker's, a USOC sponsor through '16, first sponsored the app in '14.
