Weekend Plans With Sports Media Advisors VP Dan Shevchik: Meet The Baby, Make Waffles

For Sports Media Advisors VP DAN SHEVCHIK, long-time routines are no longer regular; he and his wife SARAH are now “at the mercy” of their newborn son WILL, who turns 4 weeks old Saturday. “He definitely runs the household at the moment,” Shevchik said, “but we’re loving every minute of it.” Shevchik added Will’s timing “was actually pretty good,” because SMA closed a couple of deals the day he was born, including representing the Westminster Kennel Club in its decision to leave USA Network for FS1 after 32 years.

FIRST TIME, LONG TIME: We have some friends coming over for dinner Friday night. It’s our first extended socialization with non-family members since Will was born, so we haven’t attempted this before. The main objective is for them to meet Will, but we haven’t seen them for a while so we’re looking forward to just relaxing and enjoying some time with them. There are a lot of good restaurants within walking distance of where we live, so we’ll likely order in or get some take-out.

GREY MATTER: I’ve gone to a local gym to play basketball every Saturday morning for the past five years from 8:00-10:00am ET. It’s a fun group of people; the ages range from 15 to 71, and some of them have been playing together for 30-plus years. Anywhere from eight to 15 people show up, depending on the weekend. We won the Greenwich, Conn., town league last fall. Our team’s called Touch of Grey because there’s a couple of big GRATEFUL DEAD fans on our squad and we’re the oldest team in the league, so the name is appropriate. My role was more of a hybrid sixth man/benchwarmer, but it still was a lot of fun.

IN THE MORNING, I’M MAKING WAFFLES! I’ll usually make a plate of waffles once I get home from playing basketball. It’s a guilty pleasure that I have most weekends, even if I shouldn’t. Breakfast of pretty much any kind is my favorite, but waffles in particular. I’m not a cook, but I can handle cooking waffles because there are instructions on the box.

VAMOS A LA PLAYA: Our town has some great beaches, so we’re hoping to make it out to one of them on Saturday or Sunday. Two of them are actually small islands owned by Greenwich, and the town offers a ferry service within walking distance of where we live. Great Captain Island is not very developed so we like that one a lot, although we may opt for Island Beach this weekend. It’s about a 10-minute ferry ride from Greenwich. My wife and I both swam in college, so we really enjoy swimming in the sea.

STEEL FOUNDATION: I come from a long line of Pittsburgh sports fans, so for better or worse, I think Will’s lifelong indoctrination might get a jumpstart this weekend. The Steelers are playing in the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday night with JEROME BETTIS getting inducted, and the Pirates are on TV twice. I follow a lot of Pittsburgh sports writers on Twitter and usually read the commentary there before checking out post-game highlights online.

SKYPE DATE: My in-laws live in a small village about four hours north of London and it’s challenging to see them all the time, so every Sunday we’ll chat over Skype. Usually we’ll talk around 5:00pm, which is 10:00 at night for them. That time works out because it’s post-watching TV for them and pre-dinner for us. It’s a nice tradition we’ve developed, though it has turned into a livestream of our son the last couple of weekends.
