MLS Experimenting With Video Review For Goals, Penalty Kicks, Red Cards

While goal-line technology "appears to be too expensive for now," MLS VP/Competition Jeff Agoos claims the league "is moving closer to the in-game use of video review," according to Paul Tenorio of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. MLS has been "running trials with a low-tech version of video review in three different markets" -- Philadelphia, Vancouver and Salt Lake City -- and would like to begin experimenting with "live, in-game use either in MLS or perhaps in the third-division USL." Agoos said that the USL has "'indicated some interest' in using the technology in specific markets." Agoos: "The appetite is there for MLS. Our owners are very interested in it, it's just now getting FIFA and the International Football Association Board's blessing and getting support for it is the next step." He added, "We could test it at the All-Star Game or the combine in January where there is no competitive effect." Tenorio noted the video review, as it has been tested so far, "would focus on plays that already include a stoppage: penalty kicks, goals and red cards." The length of time "before a restart, whether on a red card, penalty or goal, is around one minute." Agoos said that the league has "used the low-tech version during its trials, but could use higher-end options, such as one being tested by the Dutch Football Association" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 8/6).
