CBS's Moonves Says Net Secures Its First $5M 30-Second Super Bowl Ad

With Super Bowl 50 still six months away, CBS yesterday said that it "has sold" a 30-second ad spot for $5M, according to Richard Morgan of the N.Y. POST. The "going rate" last year for the game on NBC was $4.5M for a 30-second spot. CBS President & CEO Les Moonves also reported that "overall revenues" in Q2 increased 1% YOY to $3.22B (N.Y. POST, 8/6). ESPN.com's Darren Rovell wrote the $5M pricetag "would affect" A-B the most. The beer company "has been the exclusive beer advertiser of the Super Bowl" since '89, and the company "typically buys the most spots." But because of this, A-B "doesn't pay the same price that other advertisers who buy one ad pay" (ESPN.com, 8/5).

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: USA TODAY's Roger Yu reported CBS' Q2 income "fell 24%" to $332M. Company-wide revenue rose as its cable networks "helped offset other divisions' performance." The cable network unit's revenue "rose 19%" to $615M as Showtime "distributed the highest-grossing pay-per-view boxing event of all time in May" with the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight (USA TODAY, 8/6).
