Former UGA AD Evans Now An Asset To Maryland, Overseeing Budget, Renovations

It has been about five years since former Georgia AD DAMON EVANS was forced to resign "following a DUI arrest when he was with a woman who was not his wife," and he now serves as Maryland Senior Associate AD & CFO, according to Marc Weiszer of the ATHENS BANNER-HERALD. The 45-year-old "oversees Maryland’s budget on a daily basis and works on such things as coaching contracts, media rights deals, facilities, staff leadership, serves on university committees and does some fundraising." That includes raising money for a $155M project to "turn Cole Field House into an indoor practice facility with a new locker room, weight rooms and a sports performance center." Evans was "hesitant to take the job at Maryland because he didn’t want to have to move his family again." However, Evans said that his wife, KERRI, "encouraged him." Maryland AD KEVIN ANDERSON gave Evans the "shot to return to a college job at a good landing spot for Evans, who said he had a similar chance about two and a half years ago but it wasn’t the best fit." Anderson: "Damon has always been someone on my radar because I saw the success that he had at the University of Georgia." Evans, a '08 inductee into the SBJ/SBD 40 Under Forty HOF, "doesn’t know if he’ll ever get an opportunity to be an AD again, but says if not, he’s happy where he is now." Anderson added of Evans, "He’s a tremendous resource and someone with significant experience at a power five institution. He has a proven record of success of generating revenue. His success at Georgia and his ability to have the vision to grow the brand, upgrade facilities and lead the athletics program to a strong fiscal place was also a tremendous quality" (ATHENS BANNER-HERALD, 8/2).
