Sources: '16 PGA Tour John Deere Classic To Be Held Opposite Golf Event At Rio Olympics

Next year's PGA Tour John Deere Classic will be held Aug. 8-14, which would be "opposite the 72-hole stroke play men's golf competition" at the Rio Games, slated for Aug. 11-14, according to sources cited by Tom Johnston of the QUAD-CITY TIMES. The Greenbrier Classic "already is scheduled for July 4-10 ahead of the British Open." This year's John Deere Classic was held July 9-12, and Tournament Dir Clair Peterson said, "We've been at so many places on the schedule -- in the fall, after the British Open, before the British Open -- this community will support it. ... We like our date. ... 2016 is an Olympic year, and even if there is a change, we will go back to the rhythm of the summer again after 2016." Johnston notes the entire '15-16 wrap-around schedule is "expected to be announced after the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council meetings on July 27." Peterson speculated that "whatever tournament is played opposite the Olympics that it could potentially fare well in regards to its field." Peterson, noting the Olympics event is limited to 60 players, said, "Because there are only two players per country unless you are ranked in the Top 15 in the world, then you can take as many as four players." He added, "Whatever event is opposite the Olympics could very well have a real strong field.'' Peterson said that the PGA Tour "planned on the same 46-week schedule and that no events would be dropped" from the '16 calendar (QUAD-CITY TIMES, 7/17).
