Fox Moves Holly Sonders To Postgame Show Instead Of Interviews For U.S. Women's Open

Fox' Holly Sonders will not conduct on-course interviews during this weekend's U.S. Women's Open as she did three weeks ago during the men's Open, but she will instead "host a half-hour post-match show" on FS1 Saturday and Sunday, according to Aaron Kasinitz of PENNLIVE.com. Sonders drew a "heavy dose of criticism" after asking U.S. Open winner Jordan Spieth following his final round "if he had brought an extra outfit" for a possible Monday playoff. Fox Sports Coordinating Producer Mark Loomis said, "We're not reassigning Holly because she did a bad job. ... It's just that she can't do both the postgame show and the interviews." Sonders was part of Fox' coverage of the U.S. Senior Open two weeks ago, and Loomis said that she will be "on-air plenty" this week. Kasinitz notes veteran Irish journalist Shane O'Donoghue will "get his first stab at a post-match interview this week" (PENNLIVE.com, 7/6). In Boston, Chad Finn writes the move was a "necessary change," and while Sonders "wasn’t the most frustrating personality during the network’s US Open coverage, she was the most overmatched" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/10). USATODAY.com's Chris Chase wrote, "No one believes Sonders was reassigned because she was needed on any postgame show." Chase: "Sonders was moved because Fox needed someone who knows how to do live interviews without them being a complete embarrassment by incorporating recently completed events into the questions" (USATODAY.com, 7/8).
