WNBA Committee Still Reviewing Isiah Thomas' Proposed Ownership Stake In Liberty

The WNBA's recently formed six-member BOG committee "still is reviewing" whether to approve new Liberty President Isiah Thomas as a part-owner of the team, according to Marc Berman of the N.Y. POST. If the Liberty's plan "falls, there’s no telling whether Thomas will stick it out as president since that seemed a vital component of his decision to join" the team. His face and name are "nowhere to be found on the main page of the Liberty’s website," despite Owner James Dolan "hiring him to attract renewed interest in the team." On press releases announcing Liberty roster moves, Senior VP/Business & Basketball Operations Kristin Bernert and coach Bill Laimbeer "are named, but Thomas is not." A team spokesperson said that Thomas wants to give Bernert "more exposure." But it "seems MSG has had Thomas lay low until the ownership issue is settled." Through four home games, the Liberty's average attendance is "down from last season’s subpar number." In a taped interview from MSG Network’s Sunday telecast of Mystics-Liberty, Thomas said that his aim is to "rejuvenate interest in the team." Thomas: "It’s been a franchise displaced because of the renovation of the building and we kind of lost our fan base a little bit, so we want to grow back up and really just expose the talent and expose the players to New York. Once we do that, I’m confident that people will fall in love with the players" (N.Y. POST, 6/15).
