Jaguars Want Altered Lease Terms To Keep Naming-Rights Money, Advertising Revenue

The Jaguars are proposing changes to their lease agreement with the city of Jacksonville that would allow the team to "keep money from a naming rights deal for Everbank Field’s club suites and use more seating that would allow them to host large events during the off-season," according to Christopher Hong of the FLORIDA TIMES-UNION. The plan was introduced to the City Council by Mayor Alvin Brown and is "set to be discussed" today by council committees. The team earlier this year announced US Assure would become a "sponsor for the club suites on the east and west ends of the field, currently called the Touchdown Club." The team is considering an $18M renovation for the suites and has "applied for state grant money to help pay for the project." City Communications Dir David DeCamp said that allowing the Jaguars to keep the revenue from the sponsorship deal would be "consistent with other naming rights for the stadium." Hong notes the city in '10 "agreed to forgo" its $4M share of the Everbank naming-rights deal. The plan would "allow the team to use stadium seating to host off-season events, which it’s currently not authorized to do." The team could also "keep all advertising revenue from the scoreboards during those events." In exchange, the team would "pay the city a fee ranging from $1,500 to $2,000 per event" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 6/16).
