New TV Contract With ESPN Helps ACC Revenue Increase By 30% To $302M In '13-14

The ACC reported $302.3M in revenue for '13-14, "placing the conference fourth" behind the Pac-12, Big Ten and SEC, according to Jon Solomon of CBSSPORTS.com. Revenue was up 30% for the year after increasing by 4% from '11-12 to '12-13. TV revenue increased 35% to $197.2M "through a new deal with ESPN." ACC Commissioner John Swofford's compensation was $2.1M, "roughly the same amount as a year earlier." A tax return shows the league paid $10.9M to its schools in "reimbursement for participating in conference championships" (CBSSPORTS.com, 6/12). In Virginia, David Teel wrote the ACC, its schools and its fans have "every reason to welcome the news, but no one should confuse" the conference with the Big Ten and SEC. Everyone "should continue to recognize the ACC’s need to team with ESPN on a profitable cable channel that would partially close the revenue gap with the Big Ten and SEC, each of which boasts a cash-printing cable network." Thanks to its ESPN contracts, ACC media rights "have increased" 149% in the last three years. The ACC's '13-14 revenue total is nearly $11M more than the $291.7M the conference "had estimated last spring" (DAILYPRESS.com, 6/13).
