NYRA Chair Anthony Bonomo Takes Leave Of Absence Amid Involvement In Court Case

NYRA BOD Chair ANTHONY BONOMO "stepped aside" yesterday, "less than a week after his company was revealed to have provided an alleged 'no-show' job" to the son of former New York Senate Majority Leader DEAN SKELOS, according to Casey Seiler of the Albany TIMES UNION. Bonomo wrote in a brief letter to New York Gov. ANDREW CUOMO, "I do not want to have recent events distract from the ongoing work of NYRA." Bonomo's term "lasted slightly more than two months." His departure -- "a leave of absence -- resolves a potentially embarrassing situation for the association as it prepares for its biggest day of the year -- perhaps its biggest day in several years: Saturday's running of the Belmont Stakes includes Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner American Pharoah" (Albany TIMES UNION, 6/3). In N.Y., Joe Drape reports NYRA Vice Chair MICHAEL DEL GIUDICE "will assume the responsibilities" of Chair. Skelos on Monday "pleaded not guilty" in U.S. District Court to charges that he "pressured companies doing business with the state to give his son, ADAM, hundreds of thousands of dollars in jobs and commission posts" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/3).
