Source: Utah State Brings On Troy's John Hartwell To Fill Vacant AD Position

Utah State "will hire" Troy AD John Hartwell "to take over the position" that Scott Barnes vacated when he left for the same position at Pitt in April, according to a source cited by Brandon Judd of the DESERET NEWS. Hartwell's tenure at Troy began in the fall of '12 after nine seasons as Ole Miss Senior Exec Associate AD. During his time at Troy, Hartwell "spearheaded efforts to bring upgrades to the Trojans' athletic facilities." At Ole Miss, Hartwell was the Treasurer and COO of the school's Athletic Association Foundation, and he "helped grow the Ole Miss athletic budget" from $26M during FY '03 to more than $47M in FY '12 (DESERET NEWS, 6/2). In Alabama, Jeremy Wise reports Hartwell at Troy "also approved the plan to install a new 1,242 square-foot video board and ribbon boards at the football venue -- Veterans Memorial Stadium -- which cost" $2.1M (DOTHAN EAGLE, 6/2). In Salt Lake City, Lya Wodraska notes Hartwell's reputation for fundraising "earned him an opportunity for something bigger." In addition to "overseeing facility improvements, Hartwell has made strong hires for the men's basketball, softball and women's soccer coaching teams." He has also served on the D-I Basketball Issues Committee and the Division I-A BOT Exec Committee as the Sun Belt Conference rep. Hartwell's base salary at Troy last year "was $216,300 while Barnes' was $404,916" with Utah State. Hartwell "played basketball for The Citadel" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 6/2).
