Dolphins' Ross Gets High Marks For Offseason Signings, New Approach To Ownership

Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross after "seven long years ... might finally be finding his groove," as he is "taking, for lack of a better word, ownership of his team -- and it no longer feels nearly as awkward, clumsy or uninformed as it once did," according to Jeff Darlington of NFL.com. He is "injecting himself at appropriate times before delegating authority to the right people," and in the wake of QB Ryan Tannehill's extension, the Dolphins "might be rivaled only by the Jets in terms of the amount of change-for-the-better energy that exists since last season's end." It is "not hard to call this anything less than a massive surprise, especially after the horror stories that came from people who described the hiring search" for a GM to replace Jeff Ireland. It is "impressively clear that Ross seems to suddenly have a better understanding of his role as an owner." He seems to be "making decisions that should be earning him the respect of the South Florida community." In the past few years, after Ross' "continued efforts to lobby for private funding for stadium renovations, he became incredibly frustrated by the politics that were thwarting his efforts." Ross became "so frustrated, some will tell you, he even at one point considered selling altogether." But Ross "became convinced that he wanted to enjoy his time as the owner of the team he grew up loving." He "did not want to continue beating his fist and his head against the table to get public funding when his own wallet was already overflowing." This "does not make him a saint," but it "does prove he is something many fans have lamented he isn't: logical" (NFL.com, 5/20).

DOLPHIN TALE: The NFL announced yesterday that L.A. would "be eligible" to host Super Bowl LIV in '20 if a new stadium is completed by '18. In West Palm Beach, Andrew Abramson notes that could "be a blow" for Ross, who has spent $400M renovating Sun Life Stadium, in part to "attract future Super Bowls and other major sporting events." The Dolphins even "moved their home game" against the Jets to London this season because of a new NFL requirement that teams "must host a game" in the U.K. within a five-year span of hosting a Super Bowl. If Atlanta is awarded the '19 game, South Florida then "faces the possibility" of going up for the '20 game against L.A., which "has hosted seven Super Bowls but none" since '93. However, even if L.A. gets a stadium, South Florida Super Bowl host committee Chair Rodney Barreto said that his region "is in a strong position to host more Super Bowls" (PALMBEACHPOST.com, 5/21).
