Barclays Center's Green Roof Taking Shape, Slated For Completion In Early Fall

One of the nation's "biggest green roofs on a sports arena is taking shape atop Brooklyn's Barclays Center," according to Verena Dobnik of the AP. Some sections of green "already are sprouting," and when the project "is complete by the end of September, the three-acre curving rooftop is expected to be a hardy, verdant dome of grasses, flowers and plants." Planners said that the roof "not only will make the hulking arena look nicer, it also will dampen noise from loud concerts and basketball games, and act as a sponge to capture about two million gallons of stormwater to keep it from draining into city streets and waterways." However, the public "won't have access to the 130,000-square-foot rooftop," as steep angles and curves "make strolling through the grass too dangerous." Designed by N.Y.-based SHoP Architects, the Barclays Center roof "is a joint project between Forest City Ratner and Greenland USA" (AP, 5/14).

COMING UP ROSES: Moda Center has received LEED Gold recertification for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (Rip City Management).
