Late NHLer STEVE MONTADOR "suffered from CTE, according to the Canadian Sports Concussion Project at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre in Toronto, which announced results from brain autopsies of three former athletes who had experienced many concussions." In the case of Montador, the brain study showed "the widespread presence of CTE throughout his brain." He suffered "numerous concussions in his NHL career, which spanned parts of 10 seasons," and was "involved in 69 fights" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/13). Lawyers for Montador's estate yesterday said that his family "plans to sue the NHL." Montador is the "fifth former NHL player known to have had CTE, which can be diagnosed only posthumously" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/13)....Former Univ. of North Carolina football player CHRIS HAWKINS "has been arrested and charged with acting as an agent and violating North Carolina's law that bars illegally luring collegiate athletes into contracts." Hawkins "faces two charges of trying to induce" Rams DE and former UNC player ROBERT QUINN to sign a contract in '10 by giving him $13,700 in cash, and by "helping him sell game-used equipment for another $1,700" (AP, 5/12).
