Source: MLS Supporting Minneapolis Franchise Group Led By NASL Team Owner Bill McGuire

A group fronted by NASL club Minnesota United FC Owner Bill McGuire is “pulling ahead” of Vikings Owner Zygi Wilf in the race to get an MLS expansion team, according to Kaszuba & Brackin of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. McGuire now “must tackle the hard part,” which is whether to build a $150M stadium in downtown Minneapolis “privately with minimal public involvement or mount an uphill lobbying campaign at the State Capitol for significant public subsidies.” A source said that McGuire’s group “has received a letter of support from MLS.” Another source on Thursday said that McGuire “would not have to have a stadium financing package in place at the time Minnesota was awarded a franchise” (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 3/13).
