PGA Tour Set To Return To Philly Area With '18 BMW Championship At Aronimink Golf Club

Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., "has been offered" the '18 PGA Tour BMW Championship, according to Neil Hartman of CSNPHILLY.com. The club's members next month "will vote to accept" the tourney, which is the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, and it "is expected to be easily passed." Aronimink "last hosted a PGA tour event" in '10 and '11 with the AT&T National. The BMW Championship "rotates around the country each year" (CSNPHILLY.com, 2/18). In Philadelphia, Mike Kern cites sources as saying that the AT&T National "was interested in returning at some point but the club was looking for something with a higher profile." It is "no secret that Aronimink would very much like to host another PGA Championship." It did so in '62, and was "scheduled to hold the season's final major again" in '93. But it "had to pull out because of issues with minority membership at the time." The "earliest Aronimink could realistically get on the list" for the PGA Championship would "probably be the mid 2020s." Sources have said that the mid-2020s "seems to be about when" nearby Merion Golf Club "might be looking to get the U.S. Open again, if all the logistics can be worked out" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 2/19).
