NHL To Introduce Historical Box Score Database, Advanced Metrics To Official Site

When the NHL hosts its Feb. 21 Stadium Series game at Levi's Stadium, it will also "announce an in-the-works expansion to its historical stats vault that will blow puck-heads away," according to Pat Leonard of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The NHL has "never had the game’s full history of box scores digitized," but it is "getting close." The league "has spent countless hours entering hand-written box scores going as far back as the early 20th century." The database "is not being rolled out in February, but its completion is at least on the horizon." The NHL "is improving the depth to which fans can filter and sort this information." NHL.com on Feb. 20 will also "begin housing 35 new metrics such as Corsi and Fenwick, numbers that try to accurately measure puck possession by tallying and comparing team’s shot attempts." There will "be an adjustment for many, of course, in interpreting the 'advanced' stats." Corsi "tallies all shot attempts when a player is on ice, including goals, saves, missed shots and blocked shots." Fenwick "is Corsi minus blocked shots." These "are supposed to predict or reflect puck possession and goal differential, but sometimes fall short" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/8).
