League Notes

Former NFLer Sean Gilbert said that his campaign for NFLPA Exec Dir "has been a full-time job for the last year." Gilbert: “I wouldn’t say I’m politicking. I’m just trying to bring transparency to the process, going all over the country visiting with reps and players, visiting with agents as we get closer to voting day.” In Boston, Ben Volin questioned whether Gilbert "can unseat" current NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith. It is "impossible to predict, given that the NFLPA has never seen an election like this." But all Gilbert "needs is 17 out of 32 votes." Gilbert "wants to reopen CBA talks to shift money back to the players, and is willing to talk about an 18-game regular season." But the "most interesting part of his platform is moving the Super Bowl back to Presidents’ Day Weekend, during sweeps week." Sources said that the idea "has been well received" by Patriots Owner Robert Kraft and a handful of other owners (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/18).

ADDING A ROOMMATE? In St. Louis, Bernie Miklasz reported if a new football stadium in the city "gets off the ground," former A-B President David Peacock and current Edward Jones Dome Authority attorney Robert Blitz will "pursue an MLS franchise for St. Louis." Peacock recently met with MLS Commissioner Don Garber in N.Y., and a source said that Garber "will visit St. Louis (probably after the Super Bowl) to meet with local business leaders, elected officials and civic leaders" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 1/17).

POST OFFICE: In N.Y., Larry Brooks reported the NHL is "working on improving" its video review technology by "placing cameras in the goal posts." NHL Senior VP/Hockey Operations Mike Murphy in an e-mail wrote, “We are testing and experimenting with ‘in-post’ cameras and would like to introduce them when we are comfortable that they are completely functional and workable. We are not there yet. When we feel we have it right we will start to put them in nets throughout the league.” Brooks noted the current plan is to "place the cameras halfway up the posts." But Murphy said, "The league is testing different distances from the ice level" (N.Y. POST, 1/18).
