Sources: Former NFLer Gilbert Approved By NFLPA To Run Against DeMaurice Smith

Former NFLer Sean Gilbert "has fulfilled all requirements" under the NFLPA constitution to initiate the process to oppose incumbent Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith at this spring's election, according to sources cited by Jason La Canfora of CBSSPORTS.com. Player reps from each team "will vote" on the next Exec Dir during the annual meeting in March. According to the constitution, a candidate must “have the written endorsement of no less than three members of the Board of Representatives." But La Canfora noted other candidates "could emerge beyond Smith and Gilbert." Gilbert's platform is "centered around his goal of getting this CBA overturned" (CBSSPORTS.com, 1/4). Meanwhile, Michigan-based attorney Jim Acho said that he "is running" for the position. The AP noted Acho, 44, has "represented retired players and has been an advocate for improving pension and medical benefits." Acho said that his platform "was based on improving long-term health care benefits" (AP, 1/4).
