Deadspin Names Marchman Editor, Reveals Editorial Shift From Viral Content To Storytelling

Outgoing Deadspin Editor Tommy Craggs confirmed that current Deputy Editor Tim Marchman "is going to be the next editor of Deadspin," according to Jeremy Barr of CAPITAL NEW YORK. Marchman has "written for Sports Illustrated and The Wall Street Journal, among other sites." Craggs said that his Deadspin duties "end Jan. 1." He added that Gawker Media, Deadspin's parent company, is "moving away from writing stories geared for viral success, and toward quality storytelling." That vision "was first laid out" by Gawker Media Founder Nick Denton in a "lengthy Dec. 10 memo to staff, in which he announced that he's moving into a new position as CEO of Gawker Media" (CAPITALNEWYORK.com, 12/30). Craggs this week appeared on a podcast with Deadspin creator Will Leitch and said that the website's new editorial shift means that the publication will not put out “horse shit stories” and will not pander “to the Facebook algorithm anymore.” Craggs said that Deadspin’s content shift means writers will get to write “the stories that are interesting” and “that tells some sort of important truth” about the world or internet. (“The Will Leitch Experience,” SPORTSONEARTH.com, 12/30).
