Audience Analysis: ESPN's Heisman Trophy Viewership Lowest In At Least A Decade

ESPN drew 3.15 million viewers for the Heisman Trophy presentation on Saturday night, marking the telecast’s smallest audience in at least a decade. Oregon QB Marcus Mariota was the overwhelming favorite heading into the telecast. The viewership was down 25% from Florida State QB Jameis Winston’s win last year. Meanwhile, ESPN drew 1.89 million viewers for its "30 For 30" documentary “The U Part 2” following the Heisman telecast, down from 1.97 million viewers for the premiere of “Youngstown Boys” following last year’s telecast. The original doc, “The U,” which debuted after a strong audience for the ’09 Heisman telecast (Alabama RB Mark Ingram’s win), drew 2.37 million viewers.

FIGHT NIGHT: Fox finished with 2.77 million viewers for its UFC telecast on Saturday night, which featured Junior dos Santos' win over Stipe Miocic. That figure is down from 2.84 million viewers for the UFC telecast in the same slot last December, which featured Demetrious Johnson's win over Joseph Benavidez. The 2.77 million viewers marks the second-best Fox-UFC audience this year. The telecast also delivered Fox a primetime win on Saturday among males 18-34 and 18-49, as well as all adults 18-34. The UFC prelims on FS1 at 5:00pm ET delivered 654,000 viewers, up 7% from the comparable prelims last December.

The chart below lists final audience figures from recent sports telecasts on broadcast and cable TV.
