Broncos Team Up With Colorado State To Create Minor In Sports Management At School

The Broncos have partnered with Colorado State Univ. to develop a minor in sports management, pending faculty council approval. The courses for the Denver Broncos Sports Management Institute will offer hands-on experiences and opportunities with the Broncos organization, such as internships, guest lectures from management and case studies developed in coordination with the team. Topics will include turf management, business, marketing and PR plus numerous CSU student internships with the Broncos. The program will initially be housed in the Department of Management within the College of Business, but the academic framework involves four of CSU's eight colleges. The sports marketing class will be taught by CSU College of Business associate professor of marketing Todd Donavan (Broncos). The program will offer three courses in the spring semester to select CSU undergraduate students. CSU Senior Associate AD Albert Bimper, who played football at CSU and spent a year in the NFL, will fill a lead role in the program (CSU).

IF YOU'RE GONNA PLAY IN TEXAS: The AP's Jim Vertuno reported the Univ. of Texas yesterday "launched a program to aid character development in young athletes and help them be positive role models." The Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation will "work with high school coaches on a training program to help detect and intervene at signs of troubling behavior." It also will "develop a program to help athletes and other college students make sound financial decisions." The program will "create a certification program for high school coaches of both male and female athletes." UT officials "believe the program is the first of its kind in the country" (AP, 12/15).
