Former women's coach TOM SERMANNI "received $204,035 in base salary and $10,225 in extras." USSF Secretary General & CEO DAN FLYNN "is the highest-paid USSF administrator at $630,459, with $20,817 in additional compensation." The previous year, he "earned about $626,000 overall." Others "on the full-time payroll include" Managing Dir of Administration TOM KING ($251,298), Chief Administrative Officer BRIAN REMEDI ($228,815), General Counsel LISA LEVINE ($203,659) and CFO ERIC GLEASON ($181,715) (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 12/11).
BOOKSHELF: "Hockey Night In Canada" commentator DON CHERRY's new book, "STRAIGHT UP & PERSONAL," is his fourth book but "first that he has written alone." Cherry "wrote this one longhand, often in the middle of the night, starting last fall." An irregular sleeper, he "would find himself up at 3:30 in the morning and start writing." The book "covers a lot of ground, including a painful gout-ridden expedition to Afghanistan and his stint in Sochi" (GLOBE & MAIL, 12/12).
IN MEMORY: An "overflow, standing-room crowd packed the chapel" at a Ballwin, Mo., funeral home on Thursday for a memorial service for late St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist BRYAN BURWELL. Among those who attended the funeral of Wednesday's visitation were Blues Owner TOM STILLMAN, Rams coach JEFF FISHER, Rams GM LES SNEAD, Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner DOUG ELGIN and Southern Illinois Univ. basketball coach BARRY HINSON. There were "many current and former Post-Dispatch colleagues" there, too. Also on hand "were a bevy of people involved in local sports media, plus numerous well-known national media members" (ST. COURT REPORT: The lawyer for U.S. women's national soccer team G HOPE SOLO "is asking that the domestic-violence charge filed against" Solo be dismissed. Attorney TODD MAYBROWN, in a court filing said that his client "has 'been seriously prejudiced' by the two alleged victims in the case, who have not been available for depositions." Maybrown said that actually "preparing for trial in January is nearly impossible" because Solo's nephew and half-sister "have not been cooperative with Solo’s legal team" (SEATTLE TIMES, 12/12).
