Jerry Jones Supports Adding Two Playoff Teams; Goodell Expects Decision By March

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones on Tuesday said that he would "like to see the NFL playoffs expanded," according to David Helman of FOX SPORTS SOUTHWEST. Jones told KRLD-FM, "I'm for two more playoff teams right now. I think we've got the number of people in the league that are for that, and it's just a matter of when in my mind." Helman noted there has been "plenty of talk recently about the league expanding its playoff format from 12 to 14 teams -- a change that could come as soon as" the '15 season. Jones said that he "didn't want to speak for the entire league ownership, but he sounded confident that playoff expansion was on the horizon." Jones: "As it sits right now, it enjoys the favor of the staff. I've seen the league office promote it, and I've certainly seen the teams are for it. I think it could come immediately" (FOXSPORTSSOUTHWEST.com, 12/9). NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday said that the league "will decide in March whether to expand its playoff field by two teams" beginning in the '15 season. Goodell said that the proposal was "mentioned briefly" yesterday during a one-day owners meeting but "was not discussed at length" (WASHINGTON POST, 12/11).

MEET THE PRESS: In Phoenix, Mark Faller reported the NFL yesterday began offering 7,000 fans "the chance to buy tickets to Super Bowl Media Day, which will take place Jan. 27 at US Airways Center." Tickets cost $28.50, and fans who attend will "receive a gift bag that, along other things, will have a little radio so they can tune into NFL Network coverage and some player interviews." Doors will open at 9:30am MT to all ticket holders and Media Day "will begin an hour later." The format will be "one team on the floor for an hour, a break, and then the second team gets its hour" (AZCENTRAL.com, 12/10).
