Headlines & Bylines: Boston Herald Hires Sean Leahy As Sports Editor

The Boston Herald announced it has hired BostonGlobe.com Senior Sports Producer Sean Leahy to serve as its Sports Editor, effective Monday. Leahy during his tenure at the Globe was responsible for "managing and planning content and assigning stories for the 24/7 digital news cycle." Before that, he "spent several years at USA Today, where he served" as Digital NFL Editor (BOSTON HERALD, 12/4).

COLORADO ROCKY: YAHOO SPORTS' Greg Wyshynski noted Denver Post reporter Adrian Dater's "tenure ended" yesterday after "repeated incidents of offensive behavior on social media." Dater had covered the Avalanche for the paper "since the team relocated from Quebec" in '95. The latest incident for Dater "was the exposure of inappropriate messages to Maria Camacho," a Red Wings fan living in Calgary. Dater also "was suspended two months ago for a Twitter 'meltdown'" about NHL Kings D Brayden McNabb. Dater yesterday wrote on Facebook, "I've had some pretty bad substance abuse problems. Every single time I got myself in trouble with my mouth, substances helped play a role, probably a big one" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 12/3).

AD AGED: VARIETY's Brian Steinberg reported it is "not clear" whether the N.Y. Times' column about the advertising business "will continue" in '15. The uncertainty comes in the wake of news that Stuart Elliott, "who has led the paper’s 'Advertising' column since 1991, is among tens of staffers taking a buyout" (VARIETY.com, 12/3). ADWEEK's David Griner wrote "for those in the advertising world, Elliott's departure might be the most stunning." He is "widely considered the most influential advertising journalist in the U.S." Elliot joins "massively influential colleagues who are also taking a paid exit, including 25-year TV beat reporter Bill Carter and newspaper/magazine industry writer Christine Haughney" (ADWEEK.com, 12/3).
