Cubs Revise Wrigley Field Renovation Proposal In Hopes Of Landing $75M Tax Credit

The Cubs are "heading back to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks to change its plan for outfield signs in the renovated Wrigley Field in hopes of winning a federal tax credit" worth $75M, according to Danny Ecker of CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS. A source said that the Cubs tomorrow are "scheduled to appear before the commission ... where they will present a revised proposal that includes six outfield signs above the Wrigley Field bleachers instead of the seven the panel approved in July." The 2,400-square-foot video board in right field will be "reduced in size and moved closer to the right-field line," but the new size of it "could not be determined." A script ad sign that had been located down the right-field line "will be moved to the location of the video board," and an advertising sign in left-center field "will be removed" (CHICAGOBUSINESS.com, 12/2). In Chicago, Sachdev & Kamin note a settlement with the National Park Service "appears to clear the way for the Cubs to receive" the tax credits under a federal program to "encourage the preservation of historic properties." It also appears to "represent a minor concession by the Cubs, which still would have four more signs than the Landmarks Commission originally approved" in '13. However, shifting the right-field video board and reducing its size "could lessen the visual impact of that sign on Wrigley's iconic center field scoreboard" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 12/3).
