CFL Teams Pushing For Earlier Season Start, Citing Low Attendance In Cold Weather

CFL Edmonton Eskimos President & CEO Len Rhodes said that the “time has come” for the league to “move the schedule ahead,” according to Terry Jones of the EDMONTON SUN. Rhodes has “asked for such a move to go on the agenda for the CFL Management Council Dec. 10-11 in Las Vegas.” He said that he “made the request, along with Calgary Stampeders president Gord Norrie, to tackle the topic” for the ‘16 season. Rhodes began this effort prior to the CFL conference semifinals drawing "disappointing playoff crowds" on Sunday. Rhodes said, "People often talk a good game about going to the games at this time of year but they are not following through with their actions when it is 10 or 20 [Celsius] below." He added, "As a league we peak in our attendance around the Labour Day games and that's fabulous. But we should be keeping that momentum as we go toward the tail end of the season. I believe any league should build up to a crescendo as the season comes to an end." Rhodes said of conversations with broadcast partner TSN about changing the schedule, "When I asked in the past, one of the quick answers I got was that it would conflict with the hockey playoffs. But now there are network changes on that front which liberates a lot of time. The other was that we didn't know how sponsors would react. My discussions with sponsors is that they want us to be successful" (EDMONTON SUN, 11/18).
