Audience Analysis: Alabama-LSU Marks Top CBS College Football Game Of ‘14

The annual Alabama-LSU matchup averaged 9.11 million viewers for their OT game on Saturday. That figure is the lowest for the regular-season matchup between the teams since it moved to primetime in ’11, but it was still well above figures in years when it aired in a late afternoon slot. Saturday night’s game had competition on ABC from Ohio State-Michigan State, which finished with 6.83 million viewers. Alabama-LSU also is CBS’ best college football audience for the ’14 season to date, topping the 7.95 million viewers earned by Florida-Alabama on Sept. 20. Meanwhile, FS1 drew 2.048 million viewers for Baylor-Oklahoma in the 12:00pm ET window last Saturday, marking the cable net’s best college football audience this season to date and third-best CFB audience yet. FS1 also drew 1.318 million viewers for West Virginia-Texas in the 3:30pm window, marking the net’s sixth-best CFB audience on record.

DUEL IN THE DESERT: ESPN finished with 5.091 million viewers for last Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quicken Loans 500 from Phoenix Int’l Raceway, marking the best audience for the penultimate Chase race since ’09. The PIR event was the final elimination race in the revised Chase format and came one week after a highly-publicized pit-road skirmish at Texas Motor Speedway. ESPN’s audience was up 19% from 4.271 million viewers last year.

NOTES: The Week 10 Bears-Packers matchup averaged 11.31 million viewers on ESPN, marking the lowest “MNF” audience this season to date. Despite the low audience, Bears-Packers was up from 10.96 million viewers for Dolphins-Buccaneers in Week 10 last season.
