Weekend Plans With NFL Media VP/Content Tom Brady: Foo Fighters, Running, Grilling Out

With football season in full swing, NFL Media VP/Content TOM BRADY has little time to relax on weekends this fall. In addition to the demands of the work week, Brady recently moved his wife and two children to Manhattan Beach, Calif. Thus, time spent in between unpacking boxes is allocated to teaching his son baseball or his favorite pastime of running. Brady: “I don’t run with music or anything like that. I get deep in thought and just think about things or think about absolutely nothing at all. I start to get antsy when I don’t get a run in, even if I am traveling. It’s a good way to explore or see the cities: Go out for a four-mile run, it clears the mind, body and soul.”

MY BLUE HEAVEN
: Friday night I will just be getting back from a week of travel, so I will be hanging with the wife and kids. When my wife goes to bed -- I have been thoroughly enjoying the FOO FIGHTERS documentary that has been on HBO the last few weeks -- it will be a very exciting night capped off by watching that again. Saturday will be a very good day because my 7-1 Blue Devils will be playing. I will be watching them take on Syracuse in the morning. I am an ardent supporter of Duke football. Most people, for the years I went there think basketball, but I played football there as well and am thrilled that Duke has been doing really well. I am an avid runner, so I try to run on both weekend days. We just moved, so there always seems to be something to get at with the house and get squared away. I will put in some park time followed by hanging out with the parents of my son’s friends. We all get together for dinner and drinks on Saturday night.

FAMILY MATTERS
: If I actually had more than a weekend or the ability to do so, my wife and I were married in a small town in Mexico about two hours south of where we are, that would be ideal. But a good weekend getaway is definitely going to Santa Barbara. That it is a good one to get up to. I always make time for family when I can. Anyone who has kids at the age I did, their time is at a premium. So if I can get up to thirty minutes to sit and watch a college football game I’m happy. In the business of the NFL, you are usually looking at the game in a very different way, but to be able to watch a college game from the standpoint as just a fan is certainly a pleasure of mine.

GRILL MASTER
: We have a pretty nice patio out back and it’s nice to just catch up and listen to some music. Between my 4-year-old and my 2-year-old, those moments are precious. Whether it’s grilling out or whatever, that’s enjoyable. It’s all about meat: just going to the store and marinating all kinds of meats, whether it’s chicken, or filets, and just grilling some veggies and stuff off of that. There is no go-to, it's more just go to the store and see what looks good. As for dining out, I go to N.Y. a lot. I used to live there in the East Village. There is a place a friend of mine and I always go to called Iron City Burger. It is just a small little burger and beer joint.

READING RAINBOW
: Sometimes I‘ll be able to squeeze in some running on a morning with or without the dog. I have two Golden Retrievers and I like to make sure I get them out. We live pretty close to the beach and I try to get down to the water on one of those days, too. My reading material will vary depending on the book I am reading at the time. I feel like during the week I end up reading more work-related material, whether it’s the trades, tech or sports across the board. So it’s kind of nice on the weekends if I have a couple of minutes. Right now I am reading “THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY.” Once I watch “HOMELAND” on Sunday nights with my wife, there is usually a little time after she goes to bed when I log on and get things lined up, e-mails lined up for the work week. That is usually a late Sunday routine where I prep.
