Cavaliers To Debut Quicken Loans Upgrades, Tout Nation's Largest HD Arena Scoreboard

The Cavaliers' home-opener tomorrow night against the Knicks will feature the unveiling of "the largest HD scoreboard in any arena in the country," according to Chris Fedor of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. The new scoreboard, "which measures 5,500 total square feet and features LED technology, new audio/visual systems and familiar flaming sabers," is part of Cuyahoga County and the Greater Cleveland Gateway Economic Development Corp.'s updates to Quicken Loans Arena. The four-sided, center-hung scoreboard "has four enormous HD video screens that are tilted and uniquely curved to provide optimal viewing angles for all fans" (CLEVELAND.com, 10/28). In Akron, Jason Lloyd reported the scoreboard "was estimated to cost" $9.3M and was "listed on the proposed renovations that would be covered by the extension of Cleveland's sin tax on cigarettes and alcohol" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 10/28). In Ohio, Rick Noland noted the Cavs "kept the scoreboard covered throughout the preseason." The updated audio and video systems "are expected to boost Cleveland’s chances of hosting the NBA All-Star Game in the future" (Elyria CHRONICLE-TELEGRAM, 10/28).

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: In Ohio, Bob Finnan noted in addition to the scoreboard, Quicken Loans Arena "will be illuminated with a total of more than 11,682 square feet of new LED displays that have been installed in the arena's seating bowl and concourses." A new control system, for both the scoreboard and LED displays, "was installed to allow full integration of live video, team and player statistics, social media information, fan messages and closed captioning of arena announcements." The scoreboard "was created by ANC Sports Enterprises." The new sound system, "designed and installed" by Parsons Audio, "will provide fans with cutting-edge clarity that replicates touring concert technology" (Willoughby NEWS-HERALD, 10/28).
