CBS-NFL Network Combine For 11.6 Overnight Rating For Jets-Patriots Matchup

CBS and NFL Network combined for an 11.6 overnight rating for the Patriots' 27-25 win over the Jets on "TNF," up from an 11.2 last week for Colts-Texans, which also was a close matchup. The 13.7 overnight for Steelers-Ravens in Week 2 remains top "TNF" overnight this season to date. Jets-Patriots led CBS to a win in primetime among broadcast TV networks. There also was competition from FS1's Giants-Cardinals NLCS Game 5, which drew a 3.5 overnight. The NFL game peaked at a 12.4 overnight from 9:30-10:00pm ET (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

AMERICA IS WATCHING: Fox finished with a 17.4 rating and 30.0 million viewers for its NFL national window in Week 6, which featured Cowboys-Seahawks in the majority of markets. That marks Fox’ highest-rated regular-season Sunday telecast in nearly three years and the net’s most-viewed Sunday regular-season window in 19 years. The game also drew the best audience for any program on TV since the Academy Awards in March. Meanwhile, CBS is averaging 3.6 million viewers for “The NFL Today” pregame show, marking the net’s best figure through six weeks since the net reacquired NFL rights in ’98 (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor). In N.Y., Bob Raissman writes under the header, "For NY Giants Vs. Dallas Cowboys, Eyeballs Will Be Focused On Big NFC East Matchup." Sunday's matchup in Fox' national window is going to be a "showdown between the team from the USA’s biggest media market and a team with its mystique back intact." If the Giants and Cowboys "keep Sunday’s tilt tight, well into the fourth quarter, there’s absolutely no reason why they can’t match, or surpass" last week's Cowboys-Seahawks (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/17).

HEAD TO MARKET
: Cardinals game telecasts have averaged a 25.6 local rating in Phoenix through five contests, marking the team’s best figure ever after that number of games. The 25.6 rating also is up 23% from the same point last season, marking the biggest increase among all NFL clubs to date (Cardinals). Ratings for Jaguars games in the Jacksonville market increased for rookie QB Blake Bortles’ first two starts before having a “slight decline for his third start.” The decline is an “indication that the Jaguars may have gotten the TV ratings bump they will get with Bortles as quarterback until they start winning some games” (JACKSONVILLE.com, 10/15).

UP TO THE CHALLENGE: In N.Y., Justin Terranova notes CBS Sports Network's Tracy Wolfson "believes this is a crucial time for women in sports media with the domestic violence discussion heightened after a rash of incidents in the NFL." Wolfson, who is "one of 12 rotating hosts" on the net's all-female panel show, “We Need To Talk,” said, “That’s one of the reasons why we launched the show because it is the perfect time. I think it should have happened way earlier and don’t know why it hasn’t. At least we’ve come to the point where our network is the first to do it, and they said, ‘It’s about time we do a show like this.’ There is a need for a woman’s voice." Wolfson said of adding sideline reporters to the network’s NFL telecasts, “I said to (CBS Sports President) David Berson if you ever do this, I want the opportunity. I would never want to leave college for anything, but the next step is the NFL. It’s another challenge. ... There’s a lot more eyeballs on it. It’s not why I took the job, but that is the truth. I wanted the challenge (N.Y. POST, 10/17).
