Adidas' Poaching Of Nike Design Talent Seen As Indicator Of Increased Competition

The recent defection of three high-profile designers from Nike to adidas has "sent ripples across the sports apparel business" in the Portland area and put "talent swapping in the spotlight," according to Allan Brettman of the Portland OREGONIAN. Denis Dekovic, Marc Dolce and Mark Miner were "among the best known of Nike's footwear designers" before moving over to adidas last month. Sneaker blog Nice Kicks Founder, President & Editor-In-Chief Matt Halfhill said, "These three are going to do more for that brand than signing three celebrities. Celebrities are huge, but you have to have product to sell." SLAM Magazine writer Nick DePaula said that the trio's move is a "broader indication that Adidas is stepping up its game." DePaula: "The company has also been very aggressive in seeking out the best talent in the industry." Brettman noted it is unknown "how much Adidas will pay the troika" (OREGONLIVE.com, 10/11).
