Media Notes

LARADIO.com's Don Barrett cited sources as saying the Dodgers-iHeartMedia deal renewing KLAC-AM's broadcast rights for Dodgers games is for 10 years. The Dodgers "will own up to 49%" of KLAC. Perhaps there "will even be a call letter change" to KLAD (“K-L-A-Dodgers”) "as soon as iHeartMedia files a change in ownership." It is "our understanding that they must file this information with the FCC." At least "one dedicated big name addition" will be made to the staff as the "liaison between the Dodgers and KLAC" (LARADIO.com, 10/1).

FREEDOM'S JUST ANOTHER WORD: An L.A. TIMES editorial states while the Redskins "should adopt a new name -- the current one is racist -- it would not be appropriate for the FCC to get involved." Its mission is to "regulate public airwaves, but it should not determine what words broadcasters may use, even if those words are politically incorrect or outright offensive." That is a "fundamental free speech issue" (L.A. TIMES, 10/2).

GET RICH QUICK: PodcastOne will distribute "The Rich Eisen Show" starting Monday. The podcast, which will be an audio version of Eisen's DirecTV show, will be available via iTunes, the PodcastOne app and the PodcastOne website. PodcastOne CEO Norm Pattiz said he became interested in Eisen once he saw the growth in sports podcasts. Pattiz, who 35 years ago launched Westwood One, said, "Sports is right there at the top of our popularity list along with comedy podcasts and TV and film podcasts" (John Ourand, Staff Writer).

END OF THE ROAD: Longtime Tampa Bay Times columnist Gary Shelton "has decided to leave the paper" after nearly 25 years. Shelton will cover the Buccaneers for a "few more weeks before his departure" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 10/1).
