NFL Owners Meeting To Tackle How To Proceed With Players On Exempt List

With Vikings RB Adrian Peterson and Panthers DE Greg Hardy on the NFL's exempt/commissioner's permission list, next week's NFL owners meeting will include a discussion about how long teams are "going to be willing to pay these sums of money to players every week who aren't available to play for them," according to ESPN's Ed Werder. There will be talks about "how to proceed with these sorts of situations going forward." There is one model being discussed that has "all of the owners pitching in and paying a percentage, 1/32nd of such a player's salary." However, Werder said, "I really can't see any owner saying, 'Hey I'm going to pay for that guy's mistake.'" ESPN's Wendi Nix asked, "What sense does that make?" ESPN's Adam Caplan said several NFL execs have wondered when players get in trouble, why should teams "be able to replace that player when they're being paid?" Caplan: "Some people just won't accept it" ("NFL Insiders," ESPN, 10/1).

FEELING A DRAFT: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported while L.A. and Chicago are still vying to host next year's NFL Draft, the league has "set on a date: April 30 through May 2." That would be a "week earlier than last year and a week later than it normally is" in late April (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 10/2).
