Minding My Business With Mariners VP/Ballpark Operations Joe Myhra

Name: Joe Myhra

Position: Mariners VP/Ballpark Operations

Age: 33

Where I’m from: La Crosse, Wisc.

Where I call home: Seattle

Focusing on right now: Non-baseball events during the offseason.

Myhra said starting the day off with his children gets
him going on a positive note
Best advice: Someone told me when I was at the Air Force Academy to do the best job on the job you’re given. It sounds incredibly simple, but quite often people lose focus or they’re focused on the past or the future and not what’s in front of them. There’s no job too small or too large. If you do focus on the job you’re given, the rest will take care of itself.

A must for a new hire: The perfect blend of intelligence, personality and work ethic. I also look for individuals who show the ability to work in a team environment.

Person I admire the most: My dad LARRY is the most influential person in my life on many levels. He's been the standard for me in all walks of life, both professionally and personally. He was in education administration for a long time and a lot of the situations I found myself in, he was able to clarify things for me. He's provided me a template and a foundation to be a good employee, a good person, a good father.

Best book I’ve read this year: "Boys in the Boat," by DANIEL BROWN. I really enjoy nonfiction stories about the human condition, especially those based on historical events, especially American history. That book touches on all those items. Also, a portion of it was based in Seattle, so pretty cool from that standpoint.

First thing in the morning: Enjoying time with my kids. The phone's always in reach, but seeing my kids in the morning puts me in a good mood and put things in perspective. I'm not a morning person, so they start me off on the right foot. I also always turn on the news -- just keep it on in the background.

Talking tech: I don't go anywhere without my iPhone. It feels like I can do everything I need with that. It’s sort of hard to think what I did without it -- it wasn't that long ago. I'm not a huge social media guy, but I get my news through there.

Must have music: I'm all over the board -- it depends on what kind of mood I’m in. I’ll put on a Pandora station that I like and see where it goes. I like KINGS OF LEON, ZAC BROWN BANDPEARL JAM.

Food for thought: We have two young kids, so our nights out with them usually consist of Red Robin. That's about as fancy as we'll get. In summer and fall, we grill out a lot of steaks, chicken or burgers. Anytime it comes to grilling, I take over on that.

How I unwind: I love the outdoors, I love sports. If I get a minute away, I love to play golf or do yard work.

Day in the life: When I was in the Air Force I did a lot of the same activities I do here, just on a larger scale. Here, it's just one building and the grounds. In the Air Force, it's the entire base. You're taking care of runways, streets, buildings, facilities, aircraft hangers, hospitals.
