NHL Franchise Notes: Senators Accepting Canadian Tire Money At Preseason Games

In Ottawa, Danielle Dube reported the Senators are accepting Canadian Tire money "at all stores within" Canadian Tire Centre during the preseason. That includes last night's game against the Maple Leafs and the Oct. 3 game against the Canadiens. All merchandise stores, concession stands and restaurants in the arena will accept the retail store's rewards cash "no strings attached and with no limitations." Plans to use the money "beyond those two dates are up in the air and will depend" on fan feedback (OTTAWA SUN, 9/24). The rewards money "won't be accepted for parking or tips" (CTVNEWS.ca, 9/24).

THE DEVIL INSIDE: In Newark, Rich Chere writes under the header "10 Things You Should Know About Devils Co-Owner Josh Harris," and reports Harris "expects the Devils to turn a profit." Harris said, "I think we're going to make money, but that's not the primary driver." Chere also notes Harris "won't be a meddling, publicity-hungry owner," but instead "will challenge" Devils President & GM Lou Lamoriello and CEO Scott O'Neil. Harris: "The most important job I have as an owner is to pick the two guys next to me and then provide the resources and hold them accountable" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 9/25).

FASHION REVIEW: ESPN.com's Paul Lukas reviewed the new third jerseys for both the Penguins and Flyers and noted the Pens' black and gold sweater is "basically an updated throwback version of the uniform" the '91 and '92 Stanley Cup-winning teams wore. The jerseys do not have the "innocent retro charm" of the team's blue jerseys, but it is "hard to argue against a design with two championships on its resume." Meanwhile, the Flyers' new orange jersey "looks familiar" because the team wore them during the '12 Winter Classic. Lukas: "Having two orange jerseys that are so similar ... seems redundant" (ESPN.com, 9/23).

MEN AT WORK: In Philadelphia, Peter Mucha noted Flyers fans on Monday night booed the "crew scraping the ice during breaks in the action .... because they weren't women." The team during the offseason replaced the Flyers Ice Girls. Mucha: "Apparently, the team and other NHL clubs succumbed to complaints about sexism and working conditions" (PHILLY.com, 9/23).

INTO THE WILD: In Minneapolis, Nick Halter noted a Wild-themed restaurant will open in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Int'l Airport "in late October." The restaurant will be "decked out with hockey memorabilia, including a Wild logo made from hockey pucks and a facia on the bar made from broken hockey sticks." Fans can "trade their broken sticks for a $20 credit toward a new one" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 9/23).
