Critics Of Early Drawings For New Warriors Arena Say Venue Looks Like A "Toilet Bowl"

The Warriors this week at a meeting with the Citizens Advisory Committee unveiled "working drawings and sketches" of the club's proposed arena, and "immediately folks took to Twitter to relate the plans to those of a toilet bowl," according to Rusty Simmons of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Despite the criticism, Warriors GM Bob Myers said, “It’s going to get done, and it’s going be fantastic. It’s going to be so good for this organization, this community, and selfishly, for me" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 9/24). YAHOO SPORTS’s Eric Freeman wrote it is “still too early to critique” the new arena, but what “we do know … is that the latest designs make the building look like a giant toilet.” The mockups are “low on detail and do not involve any ground views, which is obviously how most people will experience the arena.” It is “likely that the final product will involve a greater contrast between the terrace area and the roof (and not make it off-white in color), thereby changing the fact that the bird's-eye view looks exactly like a closed toilet seat resting on top of the toilet itself” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 9/23). In S.F., Ron Leuty noted two office towers that are part of the Warriors’ planned arena development “could include a high-end movie theater and lab space for life sciences companies.” The Warriors’ development roster “already consists of the 18,000-seat arena, 450,000 to 500,000 gross square feet in the two office towers and 50,000 to 95,000 square feet of retail in the office buildings” (BIZJOURNALS.com, 9/19).
