Michigan Pulls Coca-Cola Promotion For Free Football Tickets After "Miscommunication"

The Univ. of Michigan said that a promotion at a student union store advertising two free tickets to this Saturday's home game against Minnesota with the purchase of two Coca-Cola products "was a 'miscommunication' and the entire offer was pulled immediately," according to Nick Baumgardner of MLIVE.com. UM in a statement said, "Coke is a great partner of ours and had purchased a limited block of tickets for the Minnesota game for a Coke retail activation aimed at Michigan students. Due to a miscommunication in the approval process, this promotion should not have run as is. As a result, it is being pulled immediately. However, all purchases to date will be honored by Coke." Baumgardner noted UM has "struggled with tickets sales this season, beginning with student season ticket sales, which fell by about 6,000 tickets this season" (MLIVE.com, 9/22). ESPN.com’s Brett McMurphy noted two tickets to the game have a “total face value of $150." It is "unknown how many tickets Coca-Cola purchased for this promotion or how many tickets were passed along to fans" yesterday. UM student newspaper The Michigan Daily reported the promotion "was available at the university's U-go's convenience stores in Ann Arbor" (ESPN.com, 9/22).
