Battery Powered: Nebraska Gets Behind Heisman Marketing Campaign For Abdullah

The Univ. of Nebraska has launched a Heisman Trophy marketing campaign for RB Ameer Abdullah that included sending members of the media a "pack of eight double-A batteries" with Abdullah's picture "on the box's front," according to Brian Christopherson of the Lincoln JOURNAL STAR. The box contains a "warning on the back" that reads, "WARNING: (1) Performance can cause shock in opposing defenders; (2) Abdullah has been known to spark his team to victory; (3) Prolonged exposure could cause an explosion on the national scene; (4) Continued use will likely result in touchdowns." The batteries were "sent to just 250 people," but members of NU's media relations department were "soon sending out pictures of the gift on social media." The school also has dedicated to Abdullah his "own slick website -- fearameer.com -- and his own popular hashtag on Twitter: #fearameer." Abdullah, who ranks second in the country with 625 rushing yards, said of the Heisman push, "It's definitely a blessing, because I remember high school and seeing Ndamukong Suh and just wondering why he wasn't promoted when he should have been. ... For them to push me as well as they have up to this point just shows that they care about me as a person more than just a football player" (Lincoln JOURNAL STAR, 9/23).
