As Chivas USA's On-Field Struggles Continue, MLS Hiatus May Be Imminent

As Chivas USA's "nightmare season continues," it becomes "more and more necessary for MLS to shut the team down" in '15, according to Ives Galarcep of GOAL.com. The club has "devolved into a laughingstock that would be easy to mock if it weren’t so painful to watch." Chivas plays in a "mostly empty StubHub Center, and do nothing to generate attendance as a visitor on the road." If shutting the club down for a season is "what it takes for a new owner to sign on the dotted line" for a $100M fee, then "start filling up the packing crates and get the dispersal draft ready for the handful of current Chivas USA players who might actually generate interest from other teams" (GOAL.com, 9/22). In California, Nick Green writes the Galaxy, who "don’t often sell out these days in relatively isolated Carson, don’t need the competition" from Chivas USA. Finding a "suitable Southern California stadium site is something the NFL has proven incapable of doing for around two decades without hurting its popularity." It is "unclear why MLS thinks it’s any different" (Torrance DAILY BREEZE, 9/23).
