'16 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials To Overlap College World Series In Omaha

The '16 U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials will "run June 26 to July 3 when the event comes to Omaha for the third time," according to Rich Kaipust of the OMAHA WORLD-HERALD. After starting on a Sunday -- when the College World Series is off -- the trials then will "run parallel to the CWS championship series for two or three nights." There was a "one-night clash" between the two events in '12. USA Swimming Assistant Exec Dir Mike Unger said while the desired dates for the '16 event were July 4-11, "there was no way around it" after the Int'l Swimming Federation set its deadline in advance of the '16 Rio Games. Unger: "Is it ideal for the CWS and Trials? Not perfect. But we found out last time that we made it work." CWS of Omaha Inc. President Jack Diesing Jr. said, "It would be fair to say, from an NCAA-College World Series standpoint, in a perfect world we wish we weren't overlapping. But I'm sure USA Swimming wishes that, too." Diesing also said any potential for the CWS reconsidering its '16 dates is "not on the table." Unger said that USA Swimming has "tried to assure both Omaha and NCAA officials that it was not USA Swimming's intention to bump heads in any fashion" (OMAHA.com, 9/11).
