Media Notes

In DC, Scott Allen noted WNEW-FM "will replace" WJFK-FM as the Wizards' flagship radio station and will broadcast all regular and postseason games. Play-by-play man Dave Johnson and analyst Glenn Consor "will return for their 17th and seventh seasons, respectively." The move will "reduce conflicts with other programming" on WJFK, which "remains the home of the Nationals and Capitals, and also broadcasts Virginia Tech and NFL primetime games." Last year, "about half" of all Wizards games aired on WJFK. Wizards playoff games were moved to WNEW to "avoid conflicts with Nationals games" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 9/4).

NO ORDINARY JOE: In St. Louis, Dan Caesar writes Fox announcer Joe Buck’s "most significant development this year is his pending addition of golf broadcasting -- something he never has done." Before covering the '15 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay outside of Tacoma, Buck and broadcast partner Greg Norman will "have a couple comparatively minor golf events to call on Fox -- Norman’s charity 'Shark Shootout' in Naples, Fla., in mid-December then a four-ball affair" in S.F. next spring. Before that, Buck "plans to meet" with ESPN’s Mike Tirico, who has been on ESPN's Masters and U.S. Open broadcasts. Buck: "I’ll sit down with Tirico and go over what his process is for getting ready for [golf]. I think [CBS’ Jim Nantz] is brilliant, arguably the best to ever do it. I just know Mike better and he has offered that to me" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/5).

NEW ADDITIONS: In Hartford, Don Amore reports former UConn men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun this season "will be joining ESPN's college basketball broadcast team." A source said that Calhoun "will do most of his work in Bristol, ESPN's home base, providing studio analysis." Calhoun will "occasionally travel to games and contribute to 'SportsCenter.'" Calhoun since retiring in '12 has "worked at UConn in an advisory capacity, helping in fundraising and appearing at speaking engagements." He will "continue that role" (HARTFORD COURANT, 9/5)....The AP is adding a live blog on NFL Sundays to its lineup of coverage, beginning this week. The blog will be published exclusively on the Pro32 Digital News Experience (AP).
