Texas A&M Will Not Sell Specific Player Jerseys, Despite Retailers' Requests

Texas A&M officials have "turned down requests from at least two national retailers that contacted the school" about selling No. 7 jerseys after the performance of QB Kenny Hill in last Thursday's opener, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN.com. The retailers were "trying to get the university to change its stance that it wouldn’t sell specific player jersey numbers this season." Sources said that despite the "potential lure of royalties," the school has "shied away" from allowing licensees to make and retailers to sell specific player jersey numbers in light of the recent Ed O'Bannon ruling. Texas A&M has "decided to only sell No. 12." The move by A&M to "deny requests to make product with Hill’s number confirms the school’s desire to stay away from the ambiguity of selling jerseys that can be attributed to current players" (ESPN.com, 9/3). YAHOO SPORTS' Graham Watson noted even though the school "won’t officially be selling any Hill merchandise, expect the usual amount of street merchandise to start popping up," especially for the school's home opener Saturday against Lamar (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 9/3).
