Eugenie Bouchard Fan Club Trademarking "Genie Army," Looks To Roll Out Merchandise

Ryan Gibb, a member of the fan club for Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard, said that he "now sees potential to turn the cheering squad into a business opportunity," according to Benjamin Shingler of the CP. The Genie Army has "become a minor phenomenon," and its members are "trying to start a website where they will sell Genie Army T-shirts." Gibb said that they have "already trademarked the name." Gibb: "Hopefully in the near future we'll have merchandise available for purchase. We want to make sure we do it all properly and by the books" (CP, 8/3). Serena Williams said of Bouchard, "I think she for sure is the future face of tennis. She's already proven being one of the faces of tennis now" (Montreal GAZETTE, 8/5). Meanwhile, Bouchard is in Montreal for the WTA side of the Rogers Cup event, and QMI AGENCY's Brian Daly notes nearly 11,000 fans on Saturday "packed centre court" at Uniprix Stadium "just to watch Bouchard practise." More than 40,000 fans "flocked to Uniprix Stadium from Friday to Sunday," and organizers said that if the "rush continues, fans will break the all-time attendance record of 174,706" set in '06 (QMI AGENCY, 8/5).
