Report: Nike Bothered By FSU Coach's Son Wearing Under Armour Sweatshirt

Nike last November sent Florida State Univ. an e-mail regarding the Under Armour sweatshirt that coach Jimbo Fisher's son wore during an "on-field embrace" with his dad caught by cameras following a win over Miami, according to Terlep & Beaton of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. FSU is a Nike school, and Nike Assistant Dir of Football Sports Marketing Mark Dupes in the e-mail wrote, "ABC cameras were on Jimbo and his Son at end of the game. ... His son was Wearing Under Armour FSU sweatshirt! Ouch. Can we please ask Jimbo to eliminate that from the son's wardrobe in the future!" Nike in a statement said its "relationship is with the Florida State Department of Athletics and does not extend to their family members." Fisher declined to comment. Photos from subsequent games, including FSU's national championship win over Auburn, show Fisher's son, Ethan, "wearing Nike-brand apparel." FSU Trademark Licensing Dir Sherri Dye in an e-mail on Nov. 12 asked FSU Senior Associate AD/Internal Operations Monk Bonasorte "what to do about requests" from UA and adidas "to produce Florida State T-shirts" bearing the No. 5 worn by FSU QB Jameis Winston. Dye responded, "We do not have anything in our contract that prevents us from approving these licensees from making tshirts although I know Nike won't like it" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/3).

OVER/UNDER: In Baltimore, Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz cited a Stores magazine report as showing that UA "made the top 10 list of fastest growing retailers" with annual revenue in '13 of $672M, a 34.8% increase from the previous year (Baltimore SUN, 8/2).
