Orlando City SC Suspends Supporter Groups After Violence At Recent Match

Orlando City SC has “banned supporter groups after four fans were arrested and 16 people were ejected” from the incoming MLS club's win over the NASAL Tampa Bay Rowdies on Sunday, according to Paul Tenorio of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. Orlando City COO Brett Lashbrook said that the team has “met with leaders of both major fan groups -- Iron Lion Firm and The Ruckus -- to discuss their conduct.” Team President Phil Rawlins in an open letter to fans wrote that the club was “suspending both supporter groups indefinitely pending their agreement to a new fan code of conduct.” The team “also suspended the four arrested fans from all future Orlando City games pending the outcome of legal proceedings.” Tenorio notes an Orlando City fan “appeared to be setting off a smoke bomb, while others backing the Lions held up a sign with a Spanish-language homophobic slur.” Orlando City execs said that they are “confident the action they are taking will squash concerns about fan conduct.” Lashbrook: "We will continue to uphold the reputation we've built in the community and the sport. And we won't let this derail what this club is and where it's going as we head into MLS.” Tenorio notes supporter groups “exist throughout MLS, and some have been sanctioned for unruly behavior.” However, the groups typically have been a "selling point for clubs who promote the unique atmosphere of soccer games” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 7/11).
